Wilton is proud to be the first community in New Hampshire to celebrate America’s 250th Anniversary in 2026, kicking off the state’s Semiquincentennial commemorations. Wilton is planning more than two dozen events for people of all ages on May 9th and the week leading up to it to celebrate the nation’s 250th birthday. From historical presentations at the Wilton Public & Gregg Free Library, to films at the Town Hall Theater, to a Continental Army Encampment, to a citizen’s “Let Freedom Ring Procession” through downtown to a reading of the Declaration of Independence at noon, the celebration will serve to educate and remind people of Wilton’s role in the American Revolution.
A centerpiece of the celebration will be the dedication and addition of Pomp Russell’s name to the Wilton’s Revolutionary War Memorial. Pomp Russell was an enslaved African American soldier and Wilton resident who served during the American Revolution, enlisting in the Continental Army, and fighting at the Battle of Bennington.
Planning for the Wilton 250 celebration began early in 2025 with a few individuals and has since grown to dozens of volunteers and local organizations. The committee is self-funding and relies on the generous support of numerous sponsors and the sale of commemorative merchandise.
